Truckin': Small Business Jobs in Transportation Growing at Astounding Rates

Every day, products, packages and people are criss-crossing the nation on a vast network of highways.

And, largely, it’s small businesses getting them here, there and everywhere.

According to Indeed, transportation and material moving jobs among small businesses have exploded over the last couple of years. The company examined which small business job sectors grew the most between 2014 and 2016.

Indeed has spent the last few months sharing data on small business jobs. Previous data has shown where small business jobs are hiring the most. And their research has also shown what types of jobs small businesses are currently looking to fill.

Jobs in Transportation by the Numbers

It wasn’t much of a race to determine which jobs grew the most. Indeed found that transportation and material moving jobs grew 190 percent from 2014 to 2016.

This data adds some weight to previous data from Indeed that showed truck drivers and heavy truck operators were the most in-demand jobs at small businesses in the U.S. this year.

The next closest job sector? Construction and “extraction” jobs. That category showed a 48 percent growth in the number of jobs at small businesses in the U.S. during that 3-year span.

Community and social services jobs with small businesses grew at a rate of 25 percent, the third-highest sector, according to Indeed.

Production jobs at small businesses have grown at a rate of 18 percent from 2014 to 2016. And the only other sector to see double-digit growth over that same time is education, training, and library jobs.

Healthcare and legal jobs each grew at a rate of 9 percent at small businesses over the last few years.

Jobs at small businesses in the building and grounds, protective services and arts, sports, and media all grew at rates of 2 percent or less, according to Indeed’s data.
