fter rolling out a series of teasers, M.I.A. launches her collection with Astrid Andersen today (9 August). The collaboration marks the ten-year anniversary of the Sri-Lankan artist’s second studio album Kala.

The Danish designer has reimagined her athleisure aesthetic with motifs from M.I.A.’s musical discourse, such as the slogan ‘Free Up My Love’ from the 2017 track Bird Song, and a black and orange colourway merged with a collection of anoraks and tracksuits. Together, they’ve worked with environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans for the collaboration.

Artist Tommy Genesis has been photographed for the collection’s campaign, and she’s previously been seen sporting the designer merch at M.I.A.’s Meltdown Festival.

“I’ve been a fan of M.I.A. for a long time,” Andersen told Vogue at her Spring/Summer 2018 show at Copenhagen Fashion Week. “She was the benchmark for cool women who would wear my new collection – so when she called me, I was mega-excited.”

“I chose to work with Astrid because she is an independent who combines function, sport, simplicity, and futurism,” the rapper said. “It all very much suits my personal style because it’s utilitarian – you can wear it to a club because everything is light.” said M.I.A.

In the past, M.I.A. has worked with Versus Versace to produce a ‘counterfeit’ collection that explored the notion of bootleg fashion.
