Beauty just got more accessible

Beauty lovers, do we have news for you (Representational Image)

It seems like we can hardly get by without Amazon these days. The e-commerce giant, founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, is where we turn to for help with stuff like: Running out of milk? There’s Amazon Pantry to order from. Need a birthday present and fast? That’s what their Prime shipping is for. Now, Amazon India might also be answering your question to what beauty product to pick up next by rolling out their own beauty line.

According to Economic Times, Amazon India is preparing to launch their own range of beauty and personal care products. These will be within the categories of both, skin care and makeup. Amazon already sells over two million beauty products from luxury brands like Elizabeth Arden to household names like Vaseline.

This won’t be the first time they have toyed around with beauty as, last December, they announced their partnership with KOTRA to retail Korean beauty products from brands like The Face Shop, Dermal and The Beauty Co. Apart from their other arms like Amazon Basics i.e. their in-house range of consumer electronic products, Amazon first began retailing beauty in October 2013. As reported by The Hindu Business Line, this category has seen 100 percent growth yearly and falls in their top five bracket of number of units ordered as well as in new customer acquisitions.

Beauty, as an industry, is growing by leaps and bounds in the Indian market. Red-Seer Consulting has reported that the domestic online beauty and personal care market in India is set to cross $3.5 billion by 2022 from its current figure of $300 million. So if you believed, even for a second that the beauty industry was all pretty faces and frothy makeup, you couldn’t be more wrong.

We expect Amazon’s move of an in-house beauty brand to be on the lines of Nykaa’s own brand, Nykaa Cosmetics which co-exists peacefully with their wide range of Indian and international brands like Clinique, Forest Essentials etc. While we’re excited to see what our friendly neighbourhood online retailer has in store for us, we can be certain that it will be quite a shake up for its competitors.
