Great designers transcend mediums—a point that Safilo, one of the largest and oldest manufactures of optical frames, ostensibly embraces, considering that it has enlisted the talents of Marcel Wanders for new collection of eyewear. Though relatively unknown in sartorial circles, Wanders is noted for being one of the most prolific product and interior designers working today. So much so that the New York Times christened him the “Lady Gaga of the design world.” And just like the songstress, Wanders seemingly never fails to showcase works that are bold, modern, and appeal to a diverse range of consumers.
“Marcel Wanders’ creativity brings Safilo’s historical product design leadership to life with an inquisitive touch on the present day,” said Luisa Delgado, the CEO of Safilo Group in a statement. “The result is an invitation to explore with your eyes the wonders of sensitivity and technique.”
Debuting at Salone del Mobile (also known as Milan Design Week), the capsule collection consists of three sunglasses with six versions of optical lenses in different color schemes—from royal blue and clover green to merlot red and midnight black. All have metal engravings with ornate patterns, giving them a distinct quality that separates them from similar styles found in the market. What’s even more interesting is that Wanders put this lustrous, eye-catching detail on the inside of the frame, intending to convey how one needs to look past the exterior to find true beauty. As he explained:
“On the inside of the glasses, we created delicate artwork as a reflection of our most beautiful self.”
