Best Winter Jackets of 2025 | Switchback Tested

It’s time to think about our autumn and winter coats again, the clocks have changed, the weather is getting more unpredictable and we all need a reliable coat for crisp dog-walks, fitness walks or countryside weekends! Our mental well-being is greatly impacted by the appropriateness of our outdoor attire, and if we are cozy, dry, and warm, we are more likely to go outside. This autumn I’ve committed to more fitness walks, I’ve even added them to my diary! Because I’m going skiing for the new year and I know I’m not very cardio fit, I’m going to walk more difficult uphill paths to get my heart rate up and get ready for my ski vacation. However, I must remain warm and dry! I’ve been looking for waterproof coats that offer not only protection from the elements, but a flattering fit and thoughtful design too, it’s about practical pieces that still feel stylish enough to wear for coffee or errands as well. Since being introduced to Lighthouse Clothing a year ago, their products have quickly become a staple in my closet.

The majority of Lighthouse coats are windproof, breathable, and fully waterproof (or water repellent), and they are made for real women who want to look good while staying dry and warm. The Tess coat is lightweight and waterproof. The Tess coat from Lighthouse is perfect for the transitional season right now, it’s waterproof (3,000 mm), windproof and breathable with fully taped seams. It comes in three gorgeous colours. I have the Teal but I also tried the Sea Kelp and it comes in Cream. On my Instagram reel, you can see me trying on the two colors! I chose the teal because it is brighter and goes better with my color scheme, but I also loved the Sea Kelp! The body is fleece-lined and it has a removable hood if you don’t walk the bulk or there is no rain about. I love the shaped hem, which is very flattering, and the numerous pockets, including a safe internal pocket, for my phone, poo bags, and keys. It is extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear. I highly recommend it because it is great and useful. I persuaded my son’s girlfriend to join me for a walk in the woods and take these lovely photos, it was a mild day with no rain but I felt comfortable in my Tess coat and I loved the useful pockets, because it is lightweight I didn’t overheat but I still felt cosy, a perfect coat for right now and as we progress into the cooler winter days.

The Haven Jersey’s warm layer I paired the Haven Jersey in Coconut with my Tess coat, and what a pleasant surprise this sweatshirt was! A beautiful fresh colour (there are lots of colours available), I sized up to the 12, it is a longer length (but not too long) and is the perfect layering piece. It is made from cotton-rich jersey and is a midweight with a funnel neck and popper opening. I adore the deep pockets and the design details on the neck and cuffs! It will look great on its own, underneath the Tess coat, and underneath the Margot coat.

Padded, warm and water repellant – the Margot coat

Usually, I go with a cream coat, but this year I really liked the sage color of the Lighthouse Margot coat. A little more forgiving in terms of keeping clean but still bright, light and refreshing. This is a more comfortable design that is ideal for the upcoming cooler months. It is hip-length with a recycled filling and it has been designed to keep you warm without feeling heavy or restrictive. It resists water up to 1,000 mm, making it suitable for drizzle and light rain. The hood is detachable and adjustable, has storm cuffs that are sturdy, a lot of pockets, and a two-way zip that makes it feel comfortable over a heavier knit or fleece. The Margot coat has impressed me greatly, and I can’t wait to wear it more to brighten up my winter outings and walks. It is also available in Irish cream and navy. Why I adore Lighthouse Clothing so much I’m impressed by the quality, colors, and fit, and I especially like the quote they discreetly add to each coat design: “live simple, live happy,” which is something that everyone can relate to. Check out their Savannah coat, which has a design similar to that of the Margot but is longer.

They have a huge selection

It has been styled in the cocoa color on Instagram, and if I didn’t already have a great long coat, I would order it! Lighthouse want to celebrate the simple moments and treasure the everyday, and worrying less about the weather is part of that! I know I often avoid a walk due to rain or cold and getting frizzy hair, What is the saying ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather just unsuitable clothing’ … Northern Ireland is where Lighthouse makes their coats, and the Irish know a thing or two about bad weather! All of their designs are influenced by a desire to simplify life and a love of the coast. A great walking coat is an investment in more time outdoors with all the comfort you need while you are there. Getting the right waterproof coat for our British climate is essential and if you can do it with a beautiful, stylish layer in stunning colours then even better!
If you’re looking to upgrade your autumn coats or find a reliable winter coat before the colder weather sets in, these two are definitely worth exploring.
